Acute Pancreatitis Diet: What to Eat After AP

acute pancreatitis diet
What to eat after acute pancreatitis? On this blog about pancreatitis I have mentioned what people should eat during an acute pancreatitis attack which is, NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING.

No food, just water for hydration (ice chips may stay down better in many people with intractable nausea). If you are in the hospital, which is prudent, the ONLY thing I think they do right, in most cases, is to stop the patient from eating which allows the pancreas to rest and inflammation to resolve.

The last acute pancreatitis attack I personally experienced was about 6 years ago. It was a very nasty one. I have my own regimen that I use to stop the AP but it kept coming back. I'd get the attack to resolve and then the next day bam!

11 times in 12 days.

I was a sick puppy. And I was sick, in bed, for another 3+ weeks after I finally got it to resolve and not return. The ONLY things that passed my lips and went down my throat were:

1) 800 mgs of Ibuprofen (stops AP) it does this because it's and anti-inflammatory drug and pancreatitis is pancreas INFLAMMATION. So when the inflammation resolves so do the symptoms (pain, nausea, vomiting, etc). Toradol (ketorolac tromethamine) even more powerful than Ibuprofen is only by prescription but if you're in the ER sick ask for it!

2) Compazine or the newer Zofran for nausea (I keep nausea meds on hand at all times) and if really bad then I use promethazine suppositories 25 mgs first, then maybe the compazine too cuz I absolutely fear puking. I don't just hate puking I actually fear it. I don't fear much but puking I fear. This fear of puking actually has a name! Emetophobia. Zofran and promethazine in combination work well because Zofran shuts of the seratonin nausea receptor and promethazine shuts off the H1 and dopamine receptors. That's 3 out of 5 nausea receptors shut down which usually helps even the worst cases of nausea and vomiting.

3) Water. It's imparative to stay hydrated. Even ice chips will help.

4) The last bout on day 12 was resolved with TWO doses of aspirin (1300mgs each). The first time pain resolved but came back in 12 hours. The second dose resolved the whole episode finally but 2600 mgs of aspirin in less than a 24 hour period was NOT a pleasant experience. I felt like an aspirin. All I could taste was aspirin. It worked but wasn't pleasant. I would not recommend that much aspirin.

Once I finally got it controlled I still DID NOT eat for another 72 hours so all told I was 15 days without food. when you are sick with pancreatitis food is NOT your friend. I was sick and I was sick because I was an idiot. Let me explain so that you don't have to be sick too.

Since I had been feeling so good for quite awhile I quit taking my grape seed extract, vitamin C, curcumin and enzymes about a year or so ago, maybe longer. I don't remember. I also cheated on my diet. Then I forgot to read a damn label and I poisoned myself BIG time with hidden pork and I paid BIG time. Just an FYI turkey sausage is stuffed into pork intestines. Anyway ...

grapefruit juice protects pancreas from AP

After 48 hours with zero AP pain I dragged my ass to the store and bought some grape seed extract, vitamin C, curcumin, a multi-vitamin fromula, digestive enzymes, grapefruit juice and low sodium V8 juice. I started swallowing supplements right away and began sipping V8 and grapefruit juice a day later. I used grapefruit juice and V8 juice because both are loaded with nutrients, are especially rich sources of potassium and of course they are pure fruit and vegetable juices. Grapefruit juice (pulp, whole fruit) actually protects the pancreas from acute pancreatitis according to one study I found.

Now, I USUALLY do NOT eat when I am sick but 15 days without food is stretching the rope so I knew I needed some nutrition but that didn't mean solid food. It meant high nutrient vegetable and fruit juices were needed. If you have your own juicer oganic fresh vegetable juice made from tomatoes, spinach, watercress, beets, carrots, celery, red onion and apples (yes I know apples are fruit) is even better nutrition. Now ...

Like I said I was a sick puppy. My abdomen was tender as hell. I had a lump, almost the size of a small fist in about the center of my gut, just below my ribcage. That was about the 3rd or 4th time I'd had that lump after an acute pancreatitis attack. I had chills, nausea, fever and I felt like total shit. Sometime later, a couple weeks maybe, I also noticed a hand-sized mark on my right flank that was not there before. Could it have been Grey Turner's sign? I'm not sure.

I don't know because I didn't notice it till weeks after the acute pancreatitis attack resolved and by that time it looked like a large bruise, instead of a reddish brown color. If I did bleed a little it wasn't much because I didn't puke blood but I did have a toilet bowl with blood in it after a bout of diarrhea. I probably should have gone to the hospital. Anyway, I didn't fall or hit myself in the side so I am not sure what the bruise was from or how it got there. It also took a long time to disappear. Anyway ...

I felt like death warmed over for about another 3 weeks after the AP resolved. I lived on V8 Juice, orange juice and supplemts. Since I was running a fever I also had bought a lot of fresh garlic while on my shopping spree and I ate raw cloves of garlic with my V8 juice because raw garlic is a natural antibiotic. I smelled like a garlic clove.

I probably should have gone to the hospital but my previous poor ER experiences told me it would be a waste of effort and time so I didn't but, please do NOT be as stupid, stubborn or as untrusting as I am and IF you have or suspect you have acute pancreatitis go to the hospital so that incase you have complications they can hopefully treat you appropriately and get you well.

After about 3 weeks I began to feel much better, I even started to get hungry. When I was really hungry I fixed a small batch of rice and veggies. No oil, no butter, nothing but BROWN rice and vegetables. Solid food for the first time in weeks and took some enzymes. I slowly progressed daily, eating small quantities of VEGAN only type foods for a time.

One does need to consume protein and we also need vitamin B12 which only comes from animal sources so in order to consume some protein and B12 without pissing off the pancreas I chose egg WHITES. I had discovered these fat free gems years ago when I was always sick but was inventing my pancreatitis diet. So I began to eat egg whites. No yolk yet, no meat (fish or poultry) and of course NO red meat, pork, lamb, duck or anything made from them, soups or broth.

egg whites for pancreatitis diet
Egg whites contain the much needed protein and vitamin B12 (necessary for making blood) and they have ZERO fat, no cholesterol; so egg whites are a perfect food source of protein for pancreatitis patients. Yes, I know ...

Dieticians, doctors, and pacreatitis patients who are still suffering after years of eating bad shit say it's ok to eat meat, broths, soups, yogurt, milk, butter, margarine, oils and tons of other shit that is bad for pancreatitis patients, especially those coming out of acute pancreatitis attacks. If you like being sick do what they say. If not, then consider common sense which dictates the two major enemies of an inflamed pancreas are FAT (all fat) and ALCOHOL; then require your meals to be prepared accordingly otherwise you are going to reap the rath of panc!

The first 6 months after an acute pancreatitis attack should include foods found ONLY in a modified VEGAN diet. True vegans do not eat any form of animal products (no meat, no dairy) but they do use oil in preperation and cooking and you should not. Oil, any kind, is NOT good for a damaged pancreas. True vegans do not consume eggs however ...

As I have said egg whites provide necessary protein without ANY fat. So there ya go, a modified vegan diet (veggies, legumes for protein, grains, spices for flavoring, egg whites for protein, no oils of any kind, no fats of any kind).

I have read so many stories of people eating high fat content foods after an AP attack either on their own or actually under doctors orders that it simply makes me wonder what they and/or their healthcare providers are thinking. It's insane and simply asking for more trouble. So ...

I hope this kinda gives you an idea of what a suitable diet for post acute pancreatitis should consist of in my humble opinion because it seems to work for me. After I had been symptom free for 6 months I began adding things like broiled or poached fish, broiled skinless chicken breast and broiled turkey breast for more protein.

Here are some pages you should probably visit:

What Caused My Acute Pancreatitis

This page is extremely important because most doctors only know two causes: gallstones and alcohol. IF they can't pin it down to those two causes then you'll get the "idiopathic" pancreatitis diagnosis which means they don't know the cause and are too lazy to look. It's highly important to actually know the cause so that cause can be addressed, cured if possible or at least hopefully taken out of the picture limiting the chances for more attacks of acute pancreatitis.

Pancreas Healing: 5 Steps to Pancreas Healing After Acute Pancreatitis

The steps you take to heal your pancreas can mean the difference between total healing if you had a mild case or continued attacks that could damage your pancreas enough to where you are a "chronic pancreatitis" sufferer.

Chronic Pancreatitis Diet: A Food Diary Is Necessary

This is an important step especially if you have already been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis or you've been damaged enough to highly suspect you'll have problems down the road. Large amounts of damage or recurrent acute pancreatitis (you keep having acute attacks because nobody has found the actual cause) which will cause damage during each attack make this step necessary. The cool thing about doing your own diary is that you'll create your own personal pancreatitis diet.

Pancreatitis Diet - Diet For Chronic Pancreatitis

A proper pancreatitis diet is extremely important and necessary if you want to be well. If you continue eating a normal American/Western diet you're going to be sick. It's just that simple.

At this point I just want to say thank you for visiting my site. If you like what you see share it on your social media platforms and in your support groups so that maybe someone may be helped.

Ibuprofen For Acute Pancreatitis

Would you like to know how to stop and acute pancreatitis attack? You do it by resolving the inflammation and that takes highly anti-inflammatory drugs and supplements.

Supplements to Help You Heal Your Pancreas

These are the highly anti-inflammatory supplements that I used to heal my pancreas and then continue to stay well. In combination with a proper diet you'll likely become a brand new person.

  1. Thank you. man this sucks. I have pancreatitis with newly diagnosed secondary adrenal insufficiency (which went undiagnosed after 20 er visits. yeah and the flagged me! this is the second bout of pancreatitis. the first was about 8 months ago and 5 visits later one Dr knew to check finally.
I'm reading your articles and I appreciate you taking the time and effort.
    Sincerely,
    Patricia

    1. You are welcome Patricia and ya pancreatitis does suck and you have another issue to deal with as well but it could always be worse. We could both be 6' under fertalizing grass. So I figure almost any day above ground is good. Thank you for visiting.

  2. I've spent hours on your site today and by far the most informative and straight forward information I've found so far (although it took me 4 weeks to come across it). I was hospitalized the first time for AP 6 weeks ago and then again 5 days ago. Both times my inflammation subsidized within 24 hours and back to normal within 48. This time mri and ultrasound found "thicken gallbladder" wall and "heterogeneous echogenicity on left lobe of liver 17.4 largest dimension. Doc now looking at Gallbladder as being culprit. Between the first and second episode I ate mostly raw vegan diet at home and zero alcohol. Last week I had to work out of town four days total and joined my colleges for dinner each night. I choose veggie options but regardless I ended up back in the hospital the day after I returned. I believe it was a combo of fat and spices in the meals that may have triggered it. What amazes me is the lack of dietary education the hospital and doctor gave me both time. All they told me was to eat a low fat diet. When I asked if I could eat almonds and avocados (main staple in my vegan diet) he told me yes. Now reading your site it seems I should stay away from both. Gotta say its going to be a challenge as I'm not used to preparing meals without at least some fat. Thanks TK - Los Angeles

    1. It is interesting to note the subtle difference between gallbladder disease, pancreatitis and food. Lets talk about the gallbladder first.

With gallbladder disease ANYTHING eaten could cause the gallbladder to either become inflamed or pass stones. Fat usually causes the inflamation but since eating food causes bile to be secreted and bile flow can cause stones to pass almost any food could cause a gallbladder attack. Now this is information I have gleened from people who have had gallbladder disease both with and without stones.

Pancreatitis is a tad different. Once the pancreas has sustained damage due to acute pancreatitis then your only enemies (aside from gallstones in your case) are alcohol and fat. Spices do not trigger AP (acute pancreatitis) in fact spices like garlic, cayenne, turmeric (unless you have gallstones), and other have HIGHLY anti-inflammatory properties which help eliminate the pancreas inflammation.

It is a challenge learning to eat to keep your pancreas happy but it can be done. Good luck to you and I wish you better health.

  3. Your website is great as i am still planning on my pancreatitis diet. I had my first attack 3 months ago and second 1 month ago. After the second attack, i had a blood test done which showed normal amylase and lipase levels. I know that I am on a path of being cured. But still sometimes my abdomen pains and after some doses of painkillers prescribed by my doctor, it feels fine. I really dont know if I will ever be cured or not.

    1. Recurrent attacks do not bode well. Has anyone discovered WHY you have had them? That would be my focus - to find out why and try to resolve the issue.
